Chitra Visweswaran, born in October 1950, is a highly acclaimed Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Her journey in dance began at the tender age of three, with her mother, Rukmini Padmanabhan, serving as her first guru [2, 4, 5, 6, 12]. She also received early training in Western Classical Ballet in London, and Manipuri and Kathak in Calcutta [2, 3, 5, 12]. At the age of ten, she commenced intensive Bharatanatyam training under Smt. T.A. Rajalakshmi, a devadasi from Tiruvidaimardur, for nearly a decade, achieving her arangetram within an astonishing ten months [2, 3, 5, 12]. Visweswaran pursued a B.A. (Honours) in English Literature from the University of Calcutta, during which she also self-studied dance theory and history [3, 4, 6]. In 1970, she was awarded a prestigious National Scholarship for advanced study in Bharatanatyam from the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, one of only two such scholarships awarded nationwide at the time [2, 3, 5, 6, 12]. This led to a four-year tutelage under the renowned Bharatanatyam doyen, Vazhuvoor Ramaiyya Pillai, in Chennai, where she was chosen to star in his dance drama "Thirumalai Kumaresa Kuravanji" within three months [2, 3, 6, 12]. At sixteen, she began teaching dance in Calcutta, and in 1975, she established the Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) in Chennai with her husband, R. Visweswaran [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]. CAPA is recognized as a premier institution, known for its holistic approach to dance, music, nattuvangam, theory, and stagecraft, and has trained multiple generations of dancers, teachers, and choreographers, with some establishing satellite institutions globally [3, 8, 9, 10]. Visweswaran is celebrated for her innovative choreography, including works like "Devi Ashta Rasa Malika" and "Panchali" [5, 6]. She also contributes to RASA, an organization using dance and music therapy for special children with learning disabilities [2, 3, 5, 6]. Her extensive career spans over five decades, with performances in more than 25 countries [4].
