Gauri Sharma Tripathi is a distinguished exponent, choreographer, and teacher of Kathak, an Indian classical dance form. She received her foundational training in the classical tradition of Kathak from her guru and mother, Padma Sharma. Her initial steps in the dance form were also guided by the legendary Guru Lacchu Maharaj. Tripathi is known for her ability to ground her performances in traditional Kathak while infusing them with a contemporary viewpoint, often incorporating other dance influences within her classical framework. She is the Artistic Director of her companies, Amara Nritya Kala Hansa and ANKH Dance UK, through which she continues to bridge traditional and contemporary choreographic journeys. Tripathi has made significant contributions to dance education, including writing the three-year degree course on Kathak for the London Contemporary Dance School and being part of the ISTD South Asian dance founding team, faculty, and examiner. She is also an artist in residence at The Southbank Centre, London, and a performing member of the NCPA and ICCR, India. Her extensive choreographic work includes productions for Akademi such as “Coming of Age,” “Escapade,” “Waterscapes,” “Initium,” “Sapnay,” “Maya,” and “Sufi Zen.” She has also choreographed “Mahabharat” and “Wah Wah Girls” for Sadler's Wells. Tripathi's solo touring pieces include “Circa,” “Waqt,” “Ishmir,” “Timelapse,” “Vyuha,” “Bodyline,” “Antahkarna,” and “Silhouette – The Borderline”. She collaborated with beatboxer Shlomo to create “Urban Vani” in 2006, a pioneering blend of Kathak and beatboxing. Tripathi has curated The Alchemy Festival for nine years and is associated with The Women of the World festival, contributing to a strong South Asian presence in the UK arts scene. She has also initiated a three-generation Kathak performance, “Taa, The Beginning,” with her mother Padma Sharma and daughter Tarini Tripathi.
