Mohanrao Shankarrao Kallianpurkar (also known as Mohan Rao Kalyanpurkar), born on August 12, 1913, in Bangalore, Karnataka, was a pivotal figure in Indian classical dance, renowned as a Kathak dancer, teacher, and scholar. He received intensive training from legendary gurus, including Sunder Prasad of the Jaipur gharana and Achhan Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj of the Lucknow gharana, allowing him to synthesize elements of both styles. Kallianpurkar played a crucial role in institutionalizing Kathak education. In 1937, he assisted Sunder Prasad in establishing the Bindadin Maharaj School of Kathak in Mumbai. In 1939, he was appointed as a Kathak teacher at the Marris College of Music, which later became the Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow, where he headed the Dance Faculty until his retirement in 1967. He is widely credited with developing the first systematic university syllabus for Kathak, which was subsequently adopted by several institutions, including M.S. University of Baroda, Benaras Hindu University, Khairagarh University, and Hyderabad University, transforming Kathak training from an oral tradition to a structured academic discipline. A pioneer of the non-gharana tradition, Kallianpurkar democratized access to Kathak beyond hereditary lineages, becoming the first non-gharanedaar artist to receive national acclaim. His choreographic contributions included ballets such as Śakuntalā, Meghadoot, War and Peace, Vikramōrvaśīyam, and Mālati Mādhav. He also served as an Emeritus Professor at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai from 1971 for ten years. Mohanrao Kallianpurkar passed away on December 1, 1985, in Hubli, Karnataka.
