🪔 About
Born on May 26, 1953, Pandita Maneesha Sathe is a highly acclaimed Kathak exponent, choreographer, and teacher from India. Her journey in Kathak began at the tender age of six, under the tutelage of Pandit Balasaheb Gokhale. At eleven, she moved to Mumbai to become a dedicated disciple of the renowned Kathak maestro, Natraj Pandit Gopi Krishna of the Banaras Gharana. This rigorous training profoundly shaped her dance style, imbuing it with both the powerful Tandav and the graceful Lasya elements. In 1975, Pandita Sathe established her dance institution, Maneesha Nrityalaya, in Pune, Maharashtra, with the aim of training students in the Guru-Shishya tradition. The academy quickly became a leading institute for Kathak, emphasizing precision, perfection, hard work, and discipline. She developed her unique teaching methodology, which has been central to the success of her disciples. Beyond traditional Kathak, Pandita Sathe is known for her innovative choreographies that incorporate contemporary social issues and blend Kathak with other art forms, such as Japanese Taiko drumming. She has performed extensively across India and internationally, receiving critical acclaim for her solo performances and group choreographies. Pandita Sathe is also a visiting professor at prestigious institutions like Savitribai Phule Pune University's Centre for Performing Arts and Bharati Vidyapeeth University. She is a recognized faculty for doctoral research and serves as the president of the 'Nritya Parishad' in Pune, dedicated to promoting dance. Her significant contributions to Kathak have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Maharashtra State Cultural Award, the Pandita Rohini Bhate Award, and the Sarang Sanman. She is also slated to receive the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her overall contribution to dance. Her teaching legacy is vast, with many disciples establishing their own dance institutes globally, carrying forward her style and the traditions of the Benaras and Lucknow gharanas. Awards & Honours: Maharashtra State Cultural Award (2006), Pandita Rohini Bhate Award (2017), Sarang Sanman (2019), Pune Corporation's 'Gaurav Puraskar', Citadel Award for cultural excellence (2006), The Alpha Award for best choreography, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2024).
