Indira Rajan (1939–2022) was a highly esteemed Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and nattuvangam artist. Born in Karaikal, Puducherry, India, in 1939, she hailed from an Isai Velalar family, a community traditionally involved in classical dance and music in Tamil Nadu. Her family boasted a rich artistic lineage, with her grandmother Sundarambal being a renowned Sadir dancer, her mother Sundara Kamakshi a well-known musician, and her paternal uncles K.N. Dandayudhapani Pillai and K.N. Pakkiriswami Pillai eminent natyacharyas. Indira Rajan began her dance training at a young age under Guru Kutralam Ganesa Pillai and performed her arangetram at nine. In 1955, she moved to Madras (now Chennai) to further refine her skills, also training with Tirugokarnam Kalyanasundaram. Throughout her career spanning over six decades, Indira Rajan performed extensively both in India and internationally, including at the Vienna International Film Festival in 1982. She was particularly noted for her exceptional nattuvangam, a rhythmic accompaniment in Bharatanatyam, and was sought after by renowned dancers like Vyjayanthimala Bali, Yamini Krishnamurthi, and Alarmel Valli to conduct their performances. She composed dances for traditional songs and choreographed numerous dance-dramas and film sequences. In 1968, she founded her dance institution, Vadhini Natyalaya, in Chennai, where she trained over 1000 students. She also served as a lecturer in dance at the Government College of Music, Chennai, and was an 'asthana guru' for over two decades at a BHEL institution in Tiruchi. Recognized as one of the 'eminent gurus' by the South Zone Cultural Centre of the Indian Government, she even taught former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for a year. Indira Rajan passed away on April 29, 2022, in Chennai.
