Born in Oyoor, Kollam district, Kerala, India, on June 26, 1936, Kalamandalam Gangadharan was a renowned Kathakali musician celebrated for his unique tenor voice and precise accent. He developed an early interest in music through temple performances and began formal vocal training at age 10 under Kadakkavur Velukutty Nair. At 17, he joined Kerala Kalamandalam, where he dedicated eight years to studying Kathakali music under masters such as Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan, Kalamandalam Sivaraman Nair, and Kavungal Madhava Panicker. He was notably the first student to complete the institution's Kathakali music course and also received training from Mundaya Venkita Krishna Bhagavathar. Gangadharan joined the faculty of Kerala Kalamandalam at age 24 in 1960/1961, where he taught for over three decades, rising to the positions of Professor, Head of the Kathakali music department, and eventually Vice Principal before his retirement in 1991. He was also a visiting professor at Margi Theatre, an organization dedicated to the revival of Kathakali and Kutiyattam. After retiring, he continued to impart his knowledge at his home-based Pakalkury Kathakali Vidyalayam until his passing on April 26, 2015. His contributions to Kathakali music were significant, specializing in "aattapradhana" (dance-dominant) stories and exploring unfamiliar ragas, earning praise from Carnatic maestro Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. Gangadharan's efforts helped popularize Kathakali music globally through numerous performances and international tours to countries including Japan, the United States, Australia, China, Fiji, Indonesia, and Iran. He mentored nearly 40 students, many of whom became prominent Kathakali singers, ensuring the transmission of the Kalluvazhi vocal traditions. His pivotal role in elevating Kathakali's vocal heritage was recognized with several prestigious awards.
