🪔 About
Kartik Ram, a revered figure in Indian classical dance, was a titan of the Raigarh Gharana of Kathak. Born in 1910 in Bhanwarmal village, located in the Bilaspur district of what is now Chhattisgarh, India, his journey from a rural folk artist to a distinguished court dancer significantly shaped the technical and expressive boundaries of Kathak. His initial training in dance was under Pt. Shivnarayan, followed by comprehensive tutelage in Kathak from legendary gurus such as Jailal, Shambhu Maharaj, Lachhu Maharaj, and Achchan Maharaj. Kartik Ram's career reached its zenith under the visionary patronage of Raja Chakradhar Singh of Raigarh, who not only recognized his talent but also arranged for his extensive education in music and dance. Alongside his lifelong creative partner, Pt. Kalyan Das, he became one of the "two pillars" of the distinctive Raigarh style, renowned for its unique blend of athletic vigor and rhythmic complexity. He was celebrated for his extraordinary command over Layakari (rhythmic play) and his ability to execute incredibly fast, crisp footwork with remarkable clarity. Under the Raja's guidance, he mastered intricate compositions known as Kavit Chhand and Parans, which remain hallmark features of the Raigarh repertoire. Kartik Ram's versatility was also evident in his adeptness at both the vigorous Tandava and the expressive Abhinaya (expressive storytelling) aspects of dance, allowing him to translate poetic nuances into subtle yet impactful physical movements. As a guru, he played a crucial role in preserving Chhattisgarh's unique dance legacy, mentoring a new generation of dancers at institutions like the Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya in Khairagarh. He also taught briefly in Bhopal. Kartik Ram is remembered as a cultural architect who successfully bridged the gap between traditional folk sensibilities and the rigorous demands of classical court dance, earning him national recognition. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1982), Shikhar Samman (1980).
