Madhusri Sethuraman, also known as Madhusri Muthuswamy, is a distinguished Bharatanatyam artist with over 50 years of experience in the dance field. She began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of four under the tutelage of the world-renowned dancer Padmabushan Smt. Kamala, performing her arangetram at the remarkably young age of eight. Her extensive training continued under the esteemed Kalaimamani Sri. S.K. Rajarathnam Pillai, a renowned teacher and exponent of the art. Madhusri also honed her Abhinaya (facial expressions) skills with the late Padmabushan Kalanidhi Narayanan, a prominent figure in this specialized area. Madhusri Sethuraman moved to the U.S. in 1988, where she earned her MBA from the University of Iowa in 1990. Since 1988, she has been dedicated to promoting Bharatanatyam through various platforms. She served as a visiting instructor at the University of Iowa and taught students at Maharishi International University. Additionally, she conducted dance workshops in numerous elementary and high schools through organizations like Arts Outreach in Iowa and the Young Audiences of Greater Dallas. In 1992, Madhusri Sethuraman founded the Srutilaya School of Dance in Plano, Texas, to further the art of classical Indian dance. Through her academy, she has trained over 1,000 students and guided more than 130 students through their arangetrams (solo graduation recitals). She has choreographed 23 dance ballets, performing them with her students across the U.S., India, China, and Hong Kong. Her performances, numbering over 500, have taken place globally, including in India, the U.S.A., Europe, Australia, Singapore, China, and Hong Kong. Madhusri has received several accolades, including "Natya Kalakaumudhi" in 2015 from the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and the titles "Natya Tharagai" and "Natya Mayuri" in January 2001 during the Millennium dance festival in Chennai. She was also awarded "Abhinaya Bharathi" for her contributions to Abhinaya by an arts organization in Chennai. Her commitment extends to charitable causes, having co-founded the Charity through Art (CHAART) Foundation in 2008, which raises funds for various charities through multicultural dance performances.
