Palanad Divakaran, a renowned figure in Indian classical Kathakali music, was born on December 15, 1953, in Palanat Mana, located in the Malappuram District of Kerala, India. His father, P.M. Neelkandhan Namboodiri, was an artist with expertise in drawing, painting, and music, fostering an artistic environment for Divakaran. He pursued his higher education, completing a BA and BEd, before dedicating himself to Kathakali music. Divakaran's journey into Kathakali music began during his second year of graduation when he was captivated by the singing of the legendary Kalamandalam Unnikrishna Kurup. He subsequently underwent rigorous training in Kathakali music under Kurup in the traditional 'Gurukula' system, often as a part-time student, spending weekends immersed in learning. Additionally, he received training in Carnatic music from Mr. Krishnan Nair and Mr. G.P. Govinda Pisharody. His debut Kathakali performance took place in May 1980 at his family's Chelakkad Temple, where he rendered music for the story 'Kuchelavritham'. Over his career, Palanad Divakaran has graced numerous stages across India and internationally, with performances in cities like London, Dubai, and Hongkong. Beyond his musical pursuits, he held a government position as a high school assistant (Sanskrit) at Govt Higher Secondary School, Pulamanthole, and later retired as an Assistant Education Officer. He skillfully balanced his professional career with his profound passion for Kathakali music, even if it meant sacrificing some performance opportunities. He is recognized as a "B high" graded artiste by All India Radio, Kozhikode. Palanad Divakaran's legacy extends through his family. His wife, Mrs. Sudha, is a keen admirer and supporter of Kathakali and Carnatic music. Both his children have followed in his musical footsteps: his daughter, Deepa Palanad, is a prominent female Kathakali sangeetham singer and was trained by her father from a young age. His son, Sudeep Palanad, is also a Kathakali musician and a music director, with whom Divakaran has performed and recorded. Awards & Honours: B high graded artiste.
