🪔 About
Tadepalli Perayya Sastry (1886-1942) was a distinguished Kuchipudi guru and performer, born to Gauramma and Subbarayudu. He is recognized as a pioneering figure in the pre-independence era who worked to expand the reach of Kuchipudi beyond its traditional confines and introduce it to a wider audience. While he was an expert in performing Bhama and Gollakalapas, his primary legacy is rooted in his role as a revered mentor and teacher. Perayya Sastry's contributions extended to training Devadasis from Meduru and Nangigadda, for whom he also arranged performances and served as the Sutradhara (principal narrator). He was known for supporting accompanists in the Sampradhaya Bhagavathamelam tradition. His most notable student was the legendary Vempati Chinna Satyam, who refined his art under Perayya Sastry's tutelage. Other documented students include Josyula Sitaramayya. Tadepalli Perayya Sastry's lineage continues to be associated with Kuchipudi, with his paternal great-grandson, Tadepalli Satyanarayana Sarma, also involved in the art form.
