🪔 About

Priyadarsini Govind is an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and educator, renowned for her mastery of Bharatanatyam. Born on February 1, 1965, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, she began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of six, performing her arangetram (debut) at nine. Her initial instruction was under Shrimati Usha. She received formative guidance from two stalwarts: Kalaimamani S.K. Rajarathnam Pillai of the Vazhuvoor school, who honed her nritta (pure dance) with an emphasis on grace, musicality, and rhythmic precision, and Padma Bhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, who refined her abhinaya (expressive storytelling) and instilled a deep understanding of emotional depth. Govind's distinctive style seamlessly blends the traditional Vazhuvoor bani with innovative choreography, allowing her to explore themes of devotion and human emotions. Her extensive career includes performances at major venues and international festivals across India, the United States, Europe, Japan, France, Tunisia, Britain, and Singapore. Notable choreographic works include "Vande Mataram," "Sringaram," and "Siva Sakthi." From August 2013 to June 2017, Priyadarsini Govind served as the Director of the prestigious Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai, becoming the first non-alumnus or non-faculty member to lead the institution. In this role, she oversaw academic curricula, expanded outreach programs, and contributed to the preservation of Indian performing arts. Beyond performing and directing, Govind has made significant contributions to dance education. She is the Founder-Director of NavaDarshana, an initiative focused on a holistic view of dance, and developed "Learning Ladder," an online pedagogy designed to impart the nuances of abhinaya to students worldwide through a structured, step-by-step methodology. Her pedagogical efforts also include creating instructional DVDs for Bharatanatyam. Awards & Honours: Kalaimamani (1998), Nritya Choodamani from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha (1998), Yuva Kala Bharati from Bharat Kalachar (2000), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2012), Nritya Choodamani from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha (2015), Excellence Award from the Rotary Club of Chennai (2018), Nritya Kalanidhi by Madras Music Academy (2019).
